Circuit des Remparts

19 - 21 September 2008 - Angoulême

On the road

The Grand Touring Club has a long running affiliation with the Circuit des Remparts as it is such a special event. The race on the Remparts dates back to 1939 and in 1950 Fangio and Trintignant famously competed there. In more recent years the Bugatti’s continue to come back to the event usually with two grids reappearing year on year. For 2008 we expect the quality of grids to be better than ever, with a particular theme being pre war Aston Martins, vintage sport and Bristol engined cars. The racing is always great fun and the nature of the circuit makes it a great setting.

The weekend starts on Friday evening with the Concours d’Elegance set in the town’s gardens where entrants dress up in the period of their motor car. On Saturday all the classic cars take part in the rally which takes in the most scenic parts of the Charente as the route winds through the Cognac vinyards. The road book gives detailed instructions to the coffee stops (and cognac for the co drivers if they wish). An excellent lunch is an important part of the day and afterwards the rally meanders back into Angoulême. The Concours d’Etat takes place on Saturday afternoon, past winner’s have tended to be rare or exceptional cars that have driven to the event and taken part in the rally. That evening there is the gala buffet in the covered market where the winner of the Concours d’Etat wins their height in boxes of Cognac. On our tours we also offer the most central hotels with secure parking at each of them. We supply race tickets with grandstand and paddock access.

Our Hotel

Hotel Mercure * * *
The Mercure is one of the oldest in the City and occupies the premier position right next to “Les Halles” where the
Competitor’s buffet is held. It also has the huge advantage of ample secure underground parking, especially useful during Les Remparts when parking spaces are at a premium. Although the building (Balzac’s birthplace) is historic, the rooms have all been modernised and are fairly uniform and to the normal Mercure standard. There is a pleasant bar, a good restaurant and a large breakfast room overlooking the attractive gardens. The Mercure is a natural rendez-vous during the Circuit des Remparts owing to its perfect positioning.
