Only the finishing straight remains of the original circuit. Built in the 1920s it was long seen as the world’s most challenging, if only for its incredible 14-mile length. Now, at just over three miles long it is extremely fast and better suited to the high-speed F1 cars of today. The circuit is located in the once-volcanic Eifel mountains – the winelands of Germany.

The river cuts a swathe through the picturesque landscape and is dominated by fairytale castles while its sheltered banks are covered in vines. You can get around Boppard easily on foot.
