Despite the Hungaroring being a notoriously difficult F1 circuit on which to overtake, the Budapest F1 GP is always a great race – hard fought, plenty of action and usually with a surprising result. The 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix was no exception.
It was a perfect qualifying session for McLaren but at the green light Massa shot through from behind to take the lead by the first corner. With the exception of a few laps following the pit stops it looked like a very easy ride all the way for the Ferrari – particularly when Hamilton suffered a puncture and rejoined the race back in 10th place.
Still well out in the lead and just three laps from the end the Ferrari gave up spectacularly on the start/finish line gifting the race to Kovalainen for his Formula One maiden victory in just 28 starts. Glock held on for second with Raikkonen taking the last place on the grand prix podium. Hamilton came home in fifth place.
Everyone stays in nearby Budapest so there’s a great atmosphere there during the GP race weekend. If you are not spending all your time at the Hungaroring track there is plenty to do. The city has a rich history, Budapest markets are colourful and the pavement cafes are teeming. From Castle Hill there are spectacular views over Budapest and the River Danube, and there are plenty of restaurants serving local cuisine with plenty of full-bodied Hungarian wines to wash it down.
