With the controversial ‘spy’ hearing hovering over them the McLaren team focused hard and came away with their fourth 1-2 victory of the season. The hoards of tifosi went home sorely disappointed following an early retirement from Massa and only a third place for Raikkonen behind Lewis Hamilton.
The track is located north of Milan in a former royal park – a peaceful and graceful setting for the fastest race on the calendar - and just under an hour from Lake Como where our hotels are located. Somehow superlatives don’t seem quite enough to describe this beautiful area of Italy. The forested mountains descend neatly almost to the water’s edge where small towns and villages nestle in the bays and inlets. On a clear day the sun glistens on the deep still water, disturbed only by the passing of the ferry boats and the occasional fisherman or water skier. Magnificent palazzos and villas are partially hidden on the hillsides or sit majestically lakeside with private moorings and immaculate, terraced gardens.
From a ferry boat you can really appreciate the scenery and it is an ideal way to get about. They criss cross the lake taking locals to work and tourists to play and you can hop on and off as you wish. Wherever you alight you will find lakeside restaurants serving good pasta, lake fish and crisp wines and you may even happen upon a local market where you can buy all manner of delicacies like dried fruits, mushrooms and cheeses. A weekend on the lake is the perfect antidote to the frenzy of Monza Park.
