Friday 6 August
Arriving from the UK your first night in America will be in the desert city of Las Vegas. Known for it’s glitzy hotels and casinos, Las Vegas is one of the most dynamic cities on the planet and is a really great place to spend a couple of days acclimatising and just taking in the Entertainment Capital of the World.
Saturday 7 August
After your first night in Las Vegas when you have met up with your guide and your fellow travellers, you will be picked up and taken to collect the car you have chosen for the holiday (car hire is included based on a Mustang or similar).
You can then either return to the hotel or take a short drive out into the desert to familiarise yourself with the car. Whichever you choose to do you will have a further night in Vegas where you are free to do your own thing or to join the group before heading out into the desert the following morning.
Sunday 8 August
From Vegas you will be driving to the heart of the Mohave Desert along deserted dusty roads where the desert stretches away into infinity all around you. This and the following days routes take in sections of Route 66 that are recognised to be some of the best preserved and as such give a real feeling of what riding this road in the 40s and 50s would have been like. Diners and fuel stops have a familiar feel from countless road movies filmed in this area – a truly atmospheric driving experience.
After a long hot day driving Route 66 - one of the most famous roads in the world - what better way to finish than with a dive into the pool and a cold beer. The perfect end to the day as the sun sets out in the desert.
Monday 9 August
Your next days drive will take you from the desert floor high into the San Gabriel Mountains. As you wind your way up on this snake-like road, you will feel and see the desert heat falling away behind you as you climb up and over the range before dropping down into the mountain resort of Big Bear Lake. You will arrive at the hotel around midday and with an early arrival you will be able to enjoy both the town and lake into the evening.
Tuesday 10 August
Early next morning with mist rising from the lake we will make our way out of Big Bear and along “The Rim of the World Highway” which runs the length of this beautiful mountain range. After a day cruising the high passes of the San Gabriels we will drop down into LA and your base for the next two nights.
Wednesday 11 August
After three days of travelling through mountains and American Southwest desert, driving along Sunset Strip and pulling up outside one of the coolest hotels in Los Angeles has a surreal feel to it. The luxury of this hotel makes the perfect backdrop for the whole LA experience. From the hotel you can cruise the Strip as well as Mulholland Drive where Steve McQueen raced his cars and bikes against the police.
You will drive to the edge of the Pacific Ocean and stop at some great bars and restaurants along the way. Whilst in Los Angeles you can visit the House of Blues Club which is right next door to the hotel and spend an evening in the Viper Rooms. If you do not wish to drive then you can take any one of a number of other options available from visiting the coast to touring Universal Studios. The shopping is pretty good too!
Thursday 12 August
After two days in Los Angeles we will make our way out onto the Pacific Coast Highway at Santa Monica before heading north and onto one of the World’s most stunning roads, Highway 1. The next two days will be spent on this piece of tarmac at times suspended between Cliffs and the Pacific. The Highway 1 route will continue through small towns and on to an overnight stop that you will never forget. We can personally recommend the massages on offer at this hotel.
Friday 13 August
The second day on Highway 1 is even better than the first with the road getting wilder and the scenery more spectacular. As you arrive in Big Sur ready for the weekend's activities you will have just driven some of the most amazing roads in America and hopefully experienced America at it’s best.
Saturday 14 August
Today we will visit Laguna Seca Raceway for the 2010 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. We see the finest historic cars tackling the famous Laguna Seca circuit and its unique Corkscrew corner, at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
Sunday 15 August
Today we visit the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2010 for the main day of judging.
Monday 16 August
After three nights in Monterey where, if you wish, you can have taken some great drive-outs (how about an evening cruise to watch the sun set over the Pacific?) we will set off north once more towards San Francisco. Once you arrive in San Francisco we will drop off the cars and then be taken to our city centre hotel. This will be the final night of the holiday and we will spend it enjoying the nightlife of this vibrant city.
Tuesday 17 August
Flay back to UK or extend for a few more nights in San Francisco.
