Spotlight on Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Spotlight on Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Spotlight on Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Looking ahead to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix which takes place in Baku in April, Grandstand Motor Sports team member Nik Baines has put together his top tips for what to see in Baku during the Grand Prix weekend.

Nik has worked at Grandstand since 2015. He is a key member of our sales team but has also been out to a lot of races as Grandstand's tour representative. He has led our Azerbaijan Grand Prix trip in Baku for the last 2 years and loves the city and the event.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place on the street circuit, through the streets of Baku, so the city comes alive during the long F1 weekend in Baku.

Here are Nik's Top Five tips for visitors to Baku for the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix:

1, Take a stroll through Milli Park - the park has stunning views of the Caspian Sea. You can either choose to walk through the lush green park where the F1 fan village is situated with its abundance of attractions and stalls or walk closer to the water along the promenade. The locals are very welcoming and will either give you a huge smile or occasionally stop you to ask you your thoughts on their city. They love practicing their English and the arrival of the F1 circus gives them the perfect opportunity to do so.

2, Icheri Sheher (Old Town Baku) - An absolute must is a wander through the delightful Icheri Sheher (Old Town Baku). This area is definitely my favourite part of the city and is where you will find the best local restaurants offering incredible value food and you really sense the Turkish influence when it comes to gastronomy in this part of the city. Carpet sellers line the streets and old meets new. There is a fantastic photo opportunity with the 12th century Maiden Tower in the foreground and the stunning trio of high rise buildings, the Flame towers in the background. Often the circuit promoters place a large #F1Baku feature in this area for that ultimate social media photo post.

3, Use the underpasses & bridges to get around the city - make full use of the various underpasses and bridges located around the city. The circuit is vast and one of the biggest on the F1 calendar so although it is a very flat city, you will have to walk to your grandstands. Cutting the journey time down by knowing the best routes and shortcuts is important. Having spent a long time getting to know the city over the years our representatives will know the best routes and can help you with this. My tip would be if you have tickets in the Main Absheron Grandstand and are heading to it from the Fountain Square/Nizami Street area, then use the Metro station underpass at Sahil to shave a huge amount of time from your journey.

4, Taxi advice - be slightly cautious when taking a taxi in the city and make sure it is an official ‘purple taxi’ for the best prices. Taxi travel is extremely cheap in the city but there are a few rogue drivers who will change their fare when the journey stops. My advice would be agree a price when you get in and always take one of the purple London cabs which operate in Baku. Personally I prefer to explore this fantastic city by foot as you see so much more and meet so many more wonderful people.

5, Take somthing warm to wear - as the event is now in April I would suggest taking a warm jumper or jacket. Azerbaijan very rarely experiences rain at that time of year but it is famously windy so can be a little cool in the grandstands, especially in the higher rows. During the day the temperatures are very pleasant and usually in the late teens/early twenties but it can be a little cooler in the evenings.
