Why we love (and will miss) the Malaysian Grand Prix

We were sad to have been informed recently that this year will be the last staging of the Malaysia Grand Prix at the Sepang Circuit. For almost 2 decades it has been a firm favourite of our customers and for our reps too.

4 reasons why we will miss the Malaysia Grand Prix

1, Great value for a long-haul race
The Malaysian Grand Prix was one of the first F1 races in Asia, hosting it’s first race in 1999. Now there are a number of Asian cities that stage races, however Malaysia remains superb value, with a good exchange rate and competitively priced race tickets. It’s great value for accommodation, food and shopping too.

A client once told us he could do the Malaysia Grand Prix weekend cheaper than he could do the British Grand Prix at Silverstone!

2, An excuse for a beach holiday afterwards
So many of our customers choose to extend their stay by a few days and head to the beaches of nearby Penang or the island of Langkawi.

Penang is just an hour’s flight from Kuala Lumpur, with its idyllic white beaches, vast array of restaurants and night markets. Langkawi, often referred to as ‘tropical paradise’ is an archipelago of 99 islands surrounded by the pristine waters of the Andaman Sea.

The photo speaks for itself…

3, The food
The city of Kuala Lumpur has a diverse mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese cultures and these cultures have strongly influenced the Malaysian cuisine, with so much variety on offer.

Whatever you prefer, you are bound to find something you like whether buying from a street hawker at a night market, visiting one of the city’s many food halls, or choosing to dine in a posh restobar.

4, The heat
Kuala Lumpur is located close to the equator and has a warm, tropical climate. The race used to be staged during monsoon season in March/April but was moved several years ago to October.

Our reps always recommend that clients to bring a towel with them to the circuit, to wipe a sweaty brow during the race! With an average of 70% humidity, it’s best to take plenty of water with you too (although it can’t be taken into the circuit). We’re not complaining though, as the warm temperatures are lovely in comparison to the autumn temperatures in the UK!

The final Malaysian Grand Prix will take place on 1 October 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.
